The complaint

Matrix International Textile, Inc. v. Anthony's Apparel, Inc., No. 2:26-cv-10253 (C.D. Cal.), was filed September 11, 2026 (8 pages). The plaintiff is Matrix International Textile, Inc., a California corporation based in Los Angeles. The defendants are Anthony's Apparel, Inc. d/b/a Coconut Row, a Delaware corporation; Haggar Tribal, Inc., a Texas corporation; and Does 1-10. The complaint pleads one claim for copyright infringement against all defendants and demands a jury trial. (Compl. caption; paras. 4 to 7.)

The work

Matrix alleges it owns an original two-dimensional artwork for textile printing named MX-9428, which it calls the Subject Design, registered under U.S. Copyright Registration No. VAu 1-265-087 with an effective date of registration of December 16, 2016. It alleges it sampled and sold fabric bearing the design to parties in the fashion and apparel industries. (Compl. paras. 9 to 11.)

What it alleges

On information and belief, the complaint alleges that Anthony's owns the Coconut Row and Coconut Row Palm Beach brands, operates retail stores in Florida and the website anthonysfla.com, and sold the accused products there, and that Haggar manufactured, imported, or distributed them, as identified by the RN number on their labels. Matrix alleges, on information and belief, that the defendants made, imported, distributed, offered, or sold garments bearing designs substantially or strikingly similar to the Subject Design, including Coconut Row Palm Beach damask skort, sleeveless polo, sleeveless dress, and capri legging styles shown in side-by-side comparisons. It alleges access, on information and belief, through its showroom, design library, samples, third-party vendors, or garments lawfully printed with the design, and alleges, on information and belief, that the infringement was willful. (Compl. paras. 5 to 6, 13 to 19, 23.)

Relief sought

Matrix asks for an injunction, the defendants' profits plus its losses or, if elected, statutory damages under 17 U.S.C. 504, fees under 17 U.S.C. 505, prejudgment interest, and costs. The complaint states that willful infringement exposes the defendants to statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringement. (Compl. para. 23; Prayer a to f.)
