The complaint
Liao v. Hooyoo, No. 1:26-cv-14845 (D. Mass.), was filed October 27, 2026, and is assigned to Judge William G. Young. The complaint is Document 1, runs 10 pages, and demands a jury. The plaintiff is Tingting Liao, a Chinese resident who the complaint says is the registered owner of the asserted copyright. The defendants are four Amazon storefronts: Hooyoo (store ID AOX0XCLW39Q7T), Janmoon (AGDJ0J1PMYNTO), ONLYHIM (A3FWROYUPYSCKG), and XYTIDUKEJI (A1RX3WRBRQNH8H). The complaint describes the defendants as individuals and business entities and alleges, on information and belief, that they reside in the People's Republic of China and are owned or commonly controlled by the same infringer(s). It alleges that they target consumers in the United States, including Massachusetts, through fully interactive Amazon storefronts that offer shipping to the United States and accept payment in U.S. dollars. Jurisdiction is pleaded under 28 U.S.C. 1331 and 1338; venue under 28 U.S.C. 1391(c)(3). (Compl. paras. 1 to 7; ECF No. 4.)
The work and the listings
The complaint asserts U.S. Copyright No. VA 2-432-454, which it describes as a 2D visual material work depicting uniquely artistically created leaves, and attaches the registration certificate as Exhibit 1. It alleges that Hooyoo operates ASIN B0G5HGB9J8; Janmoon, ASIN B0GWLW2FR9; ONLYHIM, ASINs B0F7L46VF5 and B0F7L1HXLG; and XYTIDUKEJI, ASINs B0DFPF215Z, B0DFPH45BX, B0DMSBQS5B, and B0DZP3XCSZ, each containing reproductions and/or derivative works of the '454 copyright distributed to the public by sale and/or offer to sell. Exhibits 1 to 3 are not on the public docket. The complaint alleges the defendants had access because Liao published the work on online platforms and authorized its use on products before the defendants created their listings, and that consumers have often been misled into believing they were buying Liao-authorized products. (Compl. paras. 2, 10 to 13, 16, 24.)
The Copyright Office record for Registration No. VA0002432454 lists Tingting Liao as author and claimant of "Watercolor Leaves Eucalyptus Leaves Willow Leaves Berries," a 2-D artwork. It gives October 26, 2023 as the date of first publication and October 16, 2024 as the effective date of registration.
Claims and relief requested
The complaint states one claim, for copyright infringement under 17 U.S.C. 501. It alleges, on information and belief, that the infringement was willful, deliberate, and committed with prior notice and knowledge of the '454 copyright, and it alleges that each defendant continues to infringe. The count seeks actual damages and profits under 17 U.S.C. 504(b) or, in the alternative, statutory damages under 504(c)(1) enhanced under 504(c)(2); injunctive relief under section 502; an order under section 503 that the accused products be impounded and destroyed; and attorneys' fees and costs under section 505. The prayer asks for a preliminary and/or permanent injunction against offering, selling, or importing unauthorized products that include any reproduction, copy, or colorable imitation of the '454 copyright, against aiding infringement, and against forming new entities or using other devices to evade the order; an order directing those in privity with the defendants and those with notice of the injunction, including online marketplaces, web hosts, payment processors, and search engines, to disable services and advertisements used for the infringing sales; actual damages and the defendants' profits or, in the alternative, statutory damages of not less than $750 and not more than $30,000 for each infringement, enhanced to not more than $150,000 for willfulness; reasonable attorneys' fees and costs; and other relief the court deems just and proper. (Compl. paras. 21 to 31; Prayer for Relief.)
